Oakland – Members, allies, and friends of the affordable housing community, including housing advocates, non-profit housing developers, labor unions, faith leaders and the faith community, as well as elected officials, will be coming together on Friday, May 8, 2009 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO) and the Kick Off of Affordable Housing Week, 2009.

In special recognition of their advocacy and service to efforts to help create homes that people can afford, EBHO will be honoring it’s members and coalition partners, including Community Economics, Inc.; Save Mount Diablo; Lynette Jung Lee, Executive Director of East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC); and Sharon Cornu, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Labor Council of Alameda County, AFL-CIO.

Joining EBHO and its honorees will be special guest presenters State Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Assemblymember Sandré Swanson, and Oakland Councilmember Jean Quan. Noted author and radio host Aimee Allison will emcee.

“East Bay Housing Organizations was founded in 1984 in Oakland as a way for people who were concerned about the lack of affordable homes to come together and work on promoting solutions to this crisis,” said Amie Fishman, Executive Director of EBHO.

“This current economic crisis was born out of the foreclosure crisis and is a direct result of the lack of homes affordable to all income levels,” said Fishman. “For EBHO, after 25 years, thousands of affordable homes developed, and many policy and legislative victories, it is important at this historic milestone for us to come together and celebrate all the gains we’ve made, and all of the hard work ahead of us.”

For the past 13 years, East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO) has organized Affordable Housing Week to highlight the positive attributes that non-profit affordable housing development brings to communities, as well as the continued need for more homes that people can afford at all income levels. The theme of this year’s Affordable Housing Week is “East Bay Housing Organizations: 25 Years of Promoting Vibrant, Affordable Communities.” There will be 25 events this year for Affordable Housing Week, including workshops, seminars, trainings, housing fairs and tours through Contra Costa and Alameda Counties.

More information, including EBHO event details and materials, is available online at www.EBHO.org.
